Ormond Beach Historical Society – Education Committee – Channel 13 News Sub-Committee

The OBHS Education Committee formed a sub-committee to provide scheduled releases to the Channel 13 Executive Producer
for Central Florida News 13. Many of us have watched Central Florida News 13 for years and somehow felt that we were not
well represented over here in East Volusia.  So, under the direction of the Education Committee Chairperson, Bonda Garrison we formed a Channel 13 sub-committee headed up by Ron and Alice Howell to begin submitting historical facts to Channel 13 for our wonderful East Volusia area.  Here is the current status of this project and our goal is to submit at least one every 2-months for the first couple of years and then evaluate where we stand at that time.  Here are our results since beginning this project in February of 2010:

March 16, 1910 - Barney Oldfield's 1909 “Blitzen Benz” - a 200 horsepower, chain drive, 21.5 liter machine sets the new measured mile record at 131.72 MPH.

April 22, 1880 - Early New Britain colonists voted to incorporate and city was named Ormond after early plantation owner Captain James Ormond I.

June 30, 1972 - The Casements was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now considered the Crown Jewel of Ormond Beach.

August 6, 1853 - John Anderson was born August 6, 1853 and contributed so much to the growth and development of early Ormond.

These Channel 13 News "This Day in Central Florida History" daily announcements (spots) air approximately as follows: These spots run between .55 and .59 minutes past the hour as follows:
Please note that these spots are sometimes superseded when "Breaking News" is being broadcast. 6:55am, 8:55am, 10:55am, 2:55pm and 4:55pm
